  1. Thank you for such an inspiring article. I am a 42 year old woman who IS contemplating picking up the Equine Arts again. I am a mostly “self-taught” rider. As a teenager, I had 5 lessons in English & 2 lessons in western equitation, but bareback has always been my favorite. I have always felt that riding a horse is a dance, where both involved, pay attention to every movement and possibly feeling. I am a type of perfectionist that you speak of, but I also appreciate and somewhat crave calculated risk. My first job at 13, was riding trail at a dude ranch, where the owner, who as a child, performed in her father’s riding show at Madison Square Gardens, once told me, “Ride the horse, not the saddle”. I have always tried to do so. I deeply hope the same holds true to Dressage, because that is where I am the happiest and in the moment, “Dancing with my horse”. Thank you for opening my eyes to a common pitfall. Respectfully, Stacy

  2. Bonnie, thank you so much for your articles. The one on the spiral training scale is brilliant and so true.

  3. Love your blog – I’m in my 50’s and just fell in love with dressage. You are an inspiration. On the roller coaster and enjoying the ups and learning to dance in the rain during the downs. 🙂

  4. I also love your blog:) Found it by accident and immediately got hooked on your articles…enjoy the humor. We so need it in this sport that can be so serious. I have often had to remind myself to simply “enjoy” my horse. Your are now one of our favorites!
